The Top Female Golfers in The World

Oct 22, 2018

People are familiar with the top names in golf, like Tiger Woods, for example, but not many, if anyone other than golf fans, know the top female golfers in the world. Here is a list of some of the best women golfers in the world.

Kathy Whitworth

She stands as the first woman to win the most LPGA trophies, 88 of them. She was active during the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s and is one of the four women to win the same tournament for five times, in her case, the St. Petersburg Open. She is also the first female player to reach a staggering 1 million dollars earned during her career.

Mickey Wright

She is the second golfer, next to Kathy, to win the most LPGA trophies. She has 82 victories to her name. Her most notable period is between 1958 and 1966, when she won all of her major victories, 13 of them. This is a second place, again, next to Patty Berg who won 15 major tournaments.

Annika Sorenstam

This lady won a staggering 8 wins on the LPGA Tour of 2001 and added to her case another 11 wins at the same tour in 2003. She has eight player of the year awards and is also the first woman to play in a PGA tour since 1945, the Colonial Tournament, to be specific. That also took place in 2003. She is also the only woman to score a 59 in a competition, a significant score for any golfer.

Patty Berg

Patty Berg is an important name in the LPGA as she is one of the founders of the LPGA. She won 29 trophies during her amateur years, 3 of those being major trophies. She also won 15 majors in total, which is the most of any female golfer. Interestingly enough, she also served in the US Navy for 3 years.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias

This name is also very familiar in the world of golf, as she was not only a great golfer, but also an athlete, earning gold medals during the 1932 Olympic Games in the javelin throw and 80 meters with hurdles, and another silver for the high jump. Once she moved to golf, she also started collecting trophies. 10 victories in a year and twenty days, a record still to this day. Staying true to her athletic nature, she also played baseball and is to this day recognized as the woman with the farthest throw.

These are some of the most recognizable ladies in the world of professional golf, each of them leaving a mark on the sport. There are many more, yet these names are the most frequent ones to pop up in the world of golf.
